How To Gain Followers and Avoid Pretension

I've never successfully kept up a blog or, back in the days when biros existed, a diary. There's nothing wrong with my writing, as such, it's more that I don't imagine anyone being interested in anything I have to say or do and, if my previous efforts are anything to go by, it will quickly descend into pretentious crap.

So, forewarned, I guess I'd better briefly explain who I am and what I do and you can make your own mind up if you think you might be interested to hear more from me. I'm a designer, just the right side of his thirties, from the north-west of England. I work in a studio as a graphic designer on magazines, newspapers and associated publications, but that's not what I would describe as what I do - that's just my job. It's my freelance work that is the outlet for my expressions of creativity and what I'm hoping to, mainly, write this blog about. I create posters, fliers etc for bands, gigs, clubnights, pubs, bars, venues, events, some samples of which I'll include and will update as I finish new ones.

I've a wide range of interests/influences in my work, although many of them come from popular culture which is why you will see recurring themes of films, TV, music, literature and other pop culture imagery. I'm greatly influenced by the seminal work of Saul Bass, Art Chandry, Andy Warhol, Alphonse Muscha, Banksy (Google them if you don't know) and a number of poster artists throughout history. I love all things posters from Victorian/Wild West playbill posters, right through WWII informational posters (Loose Lips Sink Ships etc), 1960's popart, 70's cut-and-paste punk right up to the current day. Some of my contemporaries I revere include 3D Glasses, Nix, Drew Millward, Nikki Pinder, Graham D. Pilling (Google them too) although some of their work is very different from my own - I just like their work and often get jealous!

I'm happy to talk about my work and will field pretty much any question about techniques, source of ideas etc. I accept commissions, love to collaborate and share ideas. I also crave feedback - even negative as long as it's constructive - so let me know what you think.

Other than that, I'm 5'9" tall, slim, mousy brown/dark blonde medium length hair, GSOH, drinker, non-smoker, into music, creative writing, socialising, football, life. WLTM 7'11" dwarf with NSOH for discreet skiing holidays.
